Breeches are the more modern equivalent to the longer jodhpurs which were traditional worn with short boots. They are tight-fitting at the waist and legs and extend down to around the mid-calf area of the leg to allow room and comfort for being used with long riding boots. They come in a variety of styles and colors.

What are Breeches made of?

Breeches are made from a variety of materials, including cotton and synthetic materials. It is essential to pick a fabric that is comfortable and breathable, especially if you will be wearing them for extended periods of time. It should be snug but not too tight, and they should allow you to move freely.

High vs. Low Waisted Breeches

Breeches are available in both high and low-waisted styles. The high-waisted come up to the waist, while the low-waisted sit on the hips. There are pros and cons to both styles, so it’s vital to pick the pair that is right for you. High-waisted ones provide more coverage and support.

Dressage riders typically wear full seat breeches as they provide extra grip and stability in the saddle.

For jumper riders,  knee patch types are a popular choice as they provide extra grip in the right places, whilst also allowing for plenty of movement.

Breeches come in a variety of cuts and styles to suit every rider's needs. The most common types are full seat and knee patch.

Full Seat Breeches

Provides the most coverage and grip. We used to see the use of full leather seats, but more often now the synthetic leather alternatives such as ‘alcantara’ are used to simulate the grip on the inner thigh and seat area. Silicon is also now very popular alternative for a more superior grip, but not always preferred. Full seat breeches are ideal for dressage, as they provide extra grip and stability in the saddle.

Knee Patch Breeches

A popular choice for showjumping and everyday riding. They have a patch of alcantara or silicon on the inside of the knee area, which provides extra grip when riding. Knee patch breeches are available in a variety of fabrics.
