Reins: Feel, Grip and Material

Reins are the most direct physical connection between your hands and your horse's mouth. How they feel matters, but so do the practical questions of grip and durability.

Plain leather reins give the purest feel and look correct in dressage and showing. They can be slippery when wet, which is their main practical limitation for UK riders whose rides often involve rain.

Rubber-grip and laced reins are the practical choice for jumping, hacking, and riding in varied conditions. They give confidence in the wet without sacrificing much in terms of feel.

Rein length is more important than most riders realise. A rein that is too short puts the hands in an awkward position. Too long, and you are constantly gathering loops. Check that when your arms hang in a natural riding position, the reins have the right amount of slack.

Caring for Leatherwork

Reins and stirrup leathers need the same care as any leather tack. Clean with glycerine soap regularly. Condition monthly. Allow to dry naturally. Check stitching at all stress points.
